UPS Inc. said it has purchased 130 hybrid electric vehicles, which the package carrier will launch into service next year.
Thirty of the package delivery trucks will be deployed in New York and New Jersey, and 100 will go to California, UPS said in a statement.
The vehicles are of two different sizes, both from Freightliner Custom Chassis Corp. They use a hybrid drive system from Eaton Corp. and look similar to standard UPS delivery trucks.
UPS’s fleet of alternative-fuel vehicles now numbers 2,022, the company said. In addition to the 250 hybrid electric vehicles, UPS uses compress natural gas, liquefied natural gas, propane and all-electric vehicles, as well as standard diesel-powered ones.
UPS is ranked No. 1 on the Transport Topics 100 listing of U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
