Wreaths Across America Getting Strong Support from Trucking

Wreaths Across America is a non-profit organization endeavoring to place wreaths at the grave sites of veterans each year during the holidays. The project was started 19 years ago by the Worchester Wreath Company in Maine when it overproduced 5,000 wreaths. Instead of throwing them away, the company owner drove to Arlington National Cemetery and placed the extra wreaths on the headstones. Since then, the project has gained a little momentum. Individual goals this year far exceed 500,000 wreaths.

Many carriers, large and small, local and national, are participating, as are industry associations like the American Trucking Associations, the Owner-Operator and Independent Driver Association and others, along with industry suppliers like Qualcomm.

Qualcomm stepped up as a corporate sponsor, purchasing more than 2,500 wreaths, and picking up the tab for printing the programs and other materials that will be used in the ceremony at Fort Rosecrans in Point Loma, near San Diego.

A five-truck convoy carrying 26,000 wreaths is slowly making its way from Harrington, ME, to Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, DC. The volunteer trucks carrying the wreaths to Arlington are from Pottle’s Transportation, Baylor Trucking, Hartt Transportation, Walmart and one from the American Trucking Associations.

U.S. Xpress raised more than $2,500 through an employee fund-raiser and a corporate contribution to assist in the purchase of wreaths for the December 11th ceremony at the Chattanooga National Cemetery. Employees from U.S. Xpress will be volunteering to assist with the placement of the wreaths at Chattanooga National Cemetery.

U.S. Xpress driver Ted Wilson, a one-million mile safe driver who has been with the company 25 years, volunteered to make the multi-stop run that covered over 1,400 miles, beginning at the Wreaths Across America headquarters in Harrington, Maine, and concluding at the National Cemetery in Chattanooga, Tenn.

“We are proud to be a part of helping to support Wreaths Across America, and the fact that we have one of the country’s oldest national cemeteries in our hometown made this effort a perfect fit for U.S. Xpress,” said Patrick Quinn, Co-Chairman and President of U.S. Xpress Enterprises. “When you think about what our veterans have given to our country, we saw this as an excellent way to honor their service and sacrifice.”
